The chef and general manager of Morrell Caterers have filed a lawsuit against the owner, Scott Morrell.
The lawsuit claims Morrell needed to make more money, so he took on non-kosher events, but used the kitchens of local temples, including their dishes, utensils and cookware, and stored the non-kosher foods with the kosher ones.
Morrell Caterers is attached to the Woodbury Jewish Center, Temple Israel in Lawrence and Temple Beth Torah in Melville.
"There could be no more severe or dishonest or disreputable act than that," says Rabbi Raphael Adler, of the Woodbury Jewish Center.
According to the attorneys representing the two plaintiffs in the lawsuit, as many as 200 weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, and other religious events could have been tainted by non-kosher food.
